"Great Expectations" is the thirteenth episode of the third season of Grey's Anatomy and the 49th produced episode of the series. It is also the 49th produced episode of the Grey's Anaromy franchise. It was broadcast on January 25, 2007.

When the Cheif announces his retirement Burke, Derek, Addison and Mark all start to vie for his position after rumours of his sucsessor begin to circulate while Bailey pushes to open a free clinic at Seattle Grace. George's method of coping with his greif after his father's death takes it's toll on Callie while tensions mount between Addison and Alex after their kiss. The silence between Cristina and Burke continues until one of them breaks the silence, and stuns the other with what they choose to say.

"No one believes their life will turn out just kind of OK. We all think we're going to be great and from the day we decide to be surgerons we are filled with expectation. Expectations of the trails we will blaze, the people we will help, the difference we will make. Great expectations of who we will be, where we will go. And then we get there."
"We all think we're going to be great and we feel a little bit robbed when our expectations aren't met. But sometimes our expectations sell us short. Sometimes the expected simply pails in comparison to be unexpected. You gotta wonder why we cling to our expectations, because the expected is just what keeps us steady, standing, still. The expected is just the beginning, the unexpected is what changes our lives."
- Meredith Grey

  • "Enchantment" - Lily Frost
  • "Ships" - Umbrellas
  • "Love Show" - Skye
