Season Eight of Grey's Anatomy initally aired on September 22, 2011 with the premiere episode on ABC and ended on May 17, 2012 with the season finale. The season comprises of 24 episodes.

Season eight featured 14 actors appearing in a starring billing. All Season Seven cast members returned for the eighth year.

Season stars Pompeo, Oh, Chambers, Wilson, Pickens Jr., Ramírez, Capshaw, Dane, McKidd, Drew, Williams and Dempsey appear in all 24 aired eighth season episodes.

Guest CastEdit

Previous season guest stars Scott Foley (Henry), Loretta Devine (Adele), Jason George (Ben) and Daniel Sunjata (Eli) appeared throughout the season, with George and Devine appearing throughout and Foley and Sunjata appearing in the first half of season eight. Private Practice star Caterina Scorsone also appeared as Amelia to facilitate a February sweeps cross-over between the sister series'.

The eight season also introduced two new players; Holley Fain as Julia Canner, an optometrist and the series-long girlfriend of Mark Sloan and former episodic director Debbie Allen as Catherine Avery, the mother of Jackson and love interest of Webber. Amanda Fuller also made a late-season entry as pregnant intern Morgan.

Additionally, former guest stars Kate Burton (Ellis), Robert Baker (Charles) and former series star Kate Walsh (Addison) returned to portray their characters in an alternate reality in the episode "If/Then".


Free Falling

Plot: As the residents begin their fifth year, Meredith faces the drastic consequences of tampering with Derek’s clinical trial and finds her marriage, career and motherhood in jeapordy while the future of Owen and Cristina's marriage remains uncertain. Alex finds himself a pariah amongst the residents as April tries to step up to the plate as Chief Resident in the wake of a giant sinkhole in the middle of Seattle which tests the doctors of Seattle Grace like never before.

She's Gone

Plot: As the sinkhole crisis continues and with Meredith and their baby missing, Derek desperatly searches for her as he finds their future as parents and as a married couple hanging in the balance. In the wake of Meredith's firing, tensions mount between the residents and Bailey forces Cristina, Alex, Jackson and April to work together on a critical patient, alone. Teddy can't hide her concern when Henry arrives at the hospital for a procedure. Cristina and Owen both attempt to determine the future of their unborn child.

Take The Lead

Plot: The residents tackle their first solo procedures while all reeling with the news of Richard's decision to step down. For the new Chief, Owen, his new responsibilities give him the perfect way to avoid his and Cristina's martial troubles while Bailey has her own objections to Richard's choice. Meanwhile, April's leadership is tested as she struggles to command respect and Meredith's first solo neuro procedure forces the issues between her and Derek.

What Is It About Men?

Plot: The doctors of Seattle Grace are called upon to man up when a stampede at a comic book convention causes an influx of colorful characters in the OR and Derek finds that his and Meredith's decision not to work together has done little to ease the tension in their marriage. Owen and Richard both attempt to adapt to their new roles within the hospital while Mark is left with baby Sofia. Bailey is skeptical when Ben makes a return to her life, only to learn that she has moved on.

Love, Loss & Legacy

Plot: Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery, comes to Seattle Grace for a groundbreaking transplant surgery while Alex, Cristina and Arizona are faced with a dillema when Zola returns to the hospital after suffering a seizure and confidentiality laws prevent them from telling Meredith and Derek. Now the happy couple, Teddy and Henry throw a dinner party for the couples of Seattle Grace and Bailey makes a choice about the future of her love life.

Plot: After being blackballed by most of the surgeons and no longer working on neuro, Meredith finds herself working as an OB uses Lexie to spark Derek’s interest in a rare brain tumor case. Callie learns that Arizona and Mark's friendship can be more irritating that helpful while the residents all to play it safe in the O.R to avoid excessive losses in the face of their upcoming boards while April tries to find her footing as a leader and Cristina and Owen avoid the issues in their marriage.

Plot: In order to stress cooperation and teamwork, Owen enters the doctors into a softball league where they will compete against Seattle Presbyterian but finds but the doctor's personal complications interfere with their sucsess. Bailey and Meredith's interpersonal tension increases while Lexie grows jealous when she learns Mark is dating a doctor on the opposing team. Meanwhile, Alex fights to keep Zola at the hospital after the courts try to move her to another hospital.

Heart-Shaped Box

Plot: Meredith and Bailey treat George's mother making them both remember their former colleague while Callie struggles with telling her former mother in law about her new lifestyle. Arizona starts to support a new pediatric fellow, making Alex feel threatened while Teddy and Henry get into their first fight when he reveals his desire to go to medical school. Cristina becomes inspired after witnessing a heart beating outside of the body while Jackson and Lexie's future hangs in the balance.

Dark Was The Night

Plot: After Meredith and Derek finally hear back about Zola and their future as parents, she and Alex are involved in a life-threatening situation when they travel to a neighboring hospital to tend to a sick newborn. Teddy puts her husband's life in Cristina's hands when Henry is sent to the OR for surgery and she's called away on another case but the doctors choose to keep Henry's indentity from Cristina while Callie and Jackson come under fire when their patient experiences post-surgery complications.

Plot: In the aftermath of the ambulance crash, Meredith treats a survivor, the eldest daughter of a family who finds herself having to make the most difficult decision of her life. Meanwhile, in a bid to save the life of the patient Teddy is operating on, Owen forces Cristina to assist her in surgery while keeping her in the dark about the fact that Henry just died in Cristina's table.

Plot: The doctors face one of the biggest surgeries of their careers when the lives of two conjoined twins lie in their hands as Owen and Arizona try to coordinate a well rehearsed and seamless surgery. Meredith and Derek try to adapt to parenthood after gaining custody of Zola while Bailey uses Meredith as a buffer between her and Ben when things start to get serious. Meanwhile, still reelings from the news of her husband's death, Teddy questions Cristina on what exactly happened during Henry's surgery.

Hope For The Hopeless

Plot: Richard celebrates his 10,000th surgery, a liver transplant on a pait or squabbling sisters, but his day shifts dramatically when Adele arrives at the hospital, lost and alone. Meredith struggles to choose a speciality and begins to feel the pressure of her mother's legacy while Derek and Lexie operate on a previously inoperable neuroblastoma. Cristina tries to help Teddy deal with her grief by assiting surgery after surgery but, when they steal a patient from Alex, both Cristina and Teddy's connections to Owen become even more frayed.

Plot: In the name of Valentine's Day, Lexie babysits so that Meredith and Derek can enjoy a romantic night but the plight of one of her patients has her reconsidering why she's alone on Valentine's Day. Callie plans a suprise for Arizona, leaving her anxious, while Mark is left looking after the baby after his own plans fall through. Bailey worries that her busy work schedule will ruin Ben's Valentine's plans for her. Meanwhile, after their blow out, Cristina and Owen's relationship hangs in the balance while Teddy makes her feelings regarding Owen abundantly clear.

Plot: Amelia arrives in Seattle and turns to Lexie for help in persuading Derek to help her with an extremely complicated brain tumour but Derek's concerns about his sister's well being interfere with his involvement in the case. As they prepare for their oral board exams, Meredith gets a chance to shine when a man enters the E.R with his hand in a meat grinder and Alex learns a painful lesson when he pushes his intern, Morgan, too far. Meanwhile, Owen and Cristina try to salvage their marriage through counsilling and Mark and Bailey disagree over a patient's care.

Plot: Lexie joins Alex and Arizona in peads as they try to go against the odds and save Morgan's premature baby, while the pressue of the situation puts its strain on Morgan's relationship. Cristina lets her suspicions of Owen get the better of her while, as Adele's condition deteriorates, Meredith urges Richard to consider the facility that cared for her mother. Mark encourages Jackson to find a way to take the edge off when his tension begins interfering with his skills as a doctor and Teddy takes the first steps in trying to fund the research to cure Henry's disease.

Plot: As her suspicions continue to get the better of her, Cristina is forced to work on a case with the woman she suspects of sleeping with her husband, forcing her and Owen's issues to the surface. Derek tries to encourage Meredith to rejoin him on a neuro case but an unexpected turn of events threats their happiness and Lexie's career. Alex tries to deny the attraction between him and Morgan and the return of Catherine Avery forces Richard to realize the effect Adele's condition is having on him while Jackson form a bond with his mother's protege when he helps her stand up for herself.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Plot: After Meredith and Derek encounter a lion roaming the streets of Seattle, a flurry of victims of the animals rampage arrive at the hospital, including its owner. Owen tries to make up for his indiscretion against Cristina by going through Meredith while Lexie turns to Derek for advice when she learns that Mark is planning on asking Julia to move in with him. Callie quizzes Arizona on her romantic history and the plight of Teddy's patient forces her to come to terms with her status as a widow.

When he steps in as chief, Mark takes his temporary role very seriously and comes into conflict with Richard over a patient.

Plot: The residents begin interviewing for post-residency jobs and it soon becomes apparent that Cristina is being headhunted by the best hospitals in the country as Alex, April and Jackson all experience displeasure with the interviewing process. Meanwhile, the doctors treat a Jane Doe who's true identity brings the attention of worldwide media and the case keeps Meredith in Seattle and makes her question her future while Owen feels the pressure of being Chief with the hospital in the limelighy and the case rattles Bailey in an unexpected way. Richard is faced with an unsettling revelation when he visits Adele at Rose Ridge.

Plot: The residents head to San Francisco for their oral board exams but Alex begins to feel guilty about being away from the hospital as Morgan's son's case takes a turn for the worst. The stress of the exams has an unexpected effect on April while Bailey tries to mend the rift between Owen and Teddy. Meanwhile, sparks fly when Richard runs into Catherine Avery.
