The season continues to follow Meredith Grey during her residency at Seattle Grace, alongside Cristina, Alex, Lexie, April and Jackson

The season featured 14 actors credited in a starring capacity. All of the characters creditied in the sixth season with the exception of Katherine Heigl, continue to be credited as main cast members. Heigl departed during the previous season's twelfth episode and ceased being credited in the episode "Hook, Line And Sinner". Season six guest stars Sarah Drew and Jesse Williams appear on a regular basis as former Mercy West doctors April and Jackson, effective as of the season premiere

Season stars Pompeo, Oh, Chambers, Wilson, Pickens Jr., Ramírez, Capshaw, Dane, Leigh, McKidd, Raver, Drew, Williams and Dempsey appear in all 22 seventh season episodes.

Plot: In the aftermath of the shooting the staff try to deal with the physical and emotional fallout from the day that left them all changed forever. Meredith struggles to get cleared to return to surgery by the hospital's traums counciller as she watches her colleagues return to the E.R while Derek quits his role as Chief and begins living life in the fast lane. Lexie recovers from her nervous breakdown and finds Mark, not Alex, there to support her. Cristina buries herself in planning her wedding to Owen and Bailey returns to Seattle.

Shock To The System

Plot: Cristina experiences post-traumatic stress in the midst of the operation after Owen encourages her to return to the O.R while, after weeks of concealing that she was pregnant, Meredith debates telling Derek the truth about her miscarriage. Lexie struggles to regain the respect of her fellow doctors after her psychotic break and finds Mark's attempts to protect her to be suffocating while Bailey refuses to let Alex operate until he agrees to have the bullet in his chest removed. Callie and Arizona prepare to move in together while Teddy worries about the nature of current relationship.

Plot: When Derek receives an unexpected and unwelcome visit from hiss estranged siter Amelia issues between the siblings come to the surface while Derek works to help Cristina overcome her post-traumatic stress with her medical career hanging in the balance. The Chief tries to help Alex when he notices that he's refusing to use the elevators after his near-fatal shootingthe elevators and the doctors learn an unexpected secret about April. Teddy faces Andrew's impending departure from Seattle, and tries to overcome her attatchment to him, while Callie and Arizona push Owen to move out.

Plot: A visit to the obstetrician results in a disturbing revelation for Meredith and Derek and the news forces Meredith to face up to the possibility that she may have inheritted her mother's Alzheimer's gene while Lexie begins to question her sisterly relationship with Meredith when she notices how close she has become to April. Teddy confronts Jackson when tries using his physical attributes to get ahead in the operating room while Cristina's self-doubt carries outside of the hospital and into her house hunting with Owen. Mark and Callie's friendship causes problems for Arizona.

Plot: As part of their training the resident surgerons are put in charge and become attendings for the day, and Meredith and Jackson compete for the oppertunity to perform their first neurosurgery procedure while Cristina struggles to reinvigorate her interest in medicine, causing concern for Teddy. Meanwhile the attendings compete for a million dollar grant from Richard bringing Callie, Arizona, Bailey, Mark, Teddy and Derek into direct competition.

Plot: A documentary crew visits the hospital six months after the shooting to document the road to recovery for doctors and patients. Derek, Callie, Owen and Mark lead a radical surgery and Arizona learns that she has recieved the prestrigous Carter Madison grant, which puts her relationship with Callie in question. Meanwhile, Meredith helps Cristina put on a brave face for the cameras and Bailey is reunited with Mary, a former patient and survivor of the shooting, when she returns for her surgery.

That's Me Trying

Plot: Cristina finds herself in a do-or-die situation when she is left alone to monitor a critically ill lung transplant patient and Meredith's attempts to help her through force an issue in their already frosty relationship. Meanwhile, are pushed to their limits when Owen puts them through a rigorous trauma certification drill and, as they prepare for their move to Africa, Callie and Arizona begin to face problems in their relationship. Bailey struggles to find answers about the mysterious death of a patient.

Plot: Top security measures go into place as a team of doctors, led by the Chief and Teddy, try to save the life of a major political figure from the Middle East while, after finding themselves both unemployed, Cristina and Callie throw a housewarming party. Alex shows up late from a weekend getaway to his first day of rounds with the new pediatrics attending, Robert Stark while April defies her friends warnings to stay away from Alex. Jackson begins to feel paranoid that his fellow doctors don't want to work with him.

Slow Night, So Long

Plot: The attendings take Derek out to celebrate when he wins a prestigous grant for his clinical but they all face an unexpected suprise when they discover Cristina working at Joe's bar. Meanwhile, the residents are left to cope with the dreaded night shift where Meredith and Alex must fend for themselves when a patient needs surgery in Stark's absence and Lexie and Owen grow concerned about Jackson. Callie tries to get over Arizona while Teddy faces the trials of internet dating.

Adrift And At Peace

Plot: Derek takes Cristina on a fishing trip in order to help clear her mind in spite of Meredith's objections while their opposing views on how to handle Cristina forces Meredith and Owen to clash in the O.R. Feeling directionless with Cristina, Teddy tries to help Henry, a patient lacking the proper insurance to seek medical treatment. Callie returns to working at the hospital and tries to move forward with her life while Mark tries to find a way to win back a reluctant Lexie.

Plot: News of the incoming mass causalities after a gunman opens fire at a local college hits the staff hard when they must spring into action, even while their own wounds are still fresh. Cristina is tested when she finds herself in a do-or-die situation on the scene while Meredith and Derek's patient forces him to see how the shooting really affected his wife. Arizona doesn't recieve a warm welcome back to the hospital, or from Callie and Teddy marries her patient to save his life.

Plot: Arizona seeks Mark's advice as she tries to reconcile with Callie, who has big news of her own to share. Meanwhile, on the same day that they learn the race for Chief Resident has begun Meredith, Cristina, Alex, April and Jackson recieve a new crop of first year med students to teach.

Plot: Callie, Mark and Arizona must learn to navigate through their unexpected pregnancy together as Callie begins to drive her new OB Lucy Fields crazy and Mark tries to tell Lexie the truth. Derek breaks ground on his Alzheimer's trail, illiciting jealousy in Meredith when he chooses Alex to assist. As the race for Chief Resident heats up Cristina and Jackson find themselves in direct compeition and Richard objects when Bailey begins tweeting her surgeries.

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Plot: In light of recent events, Lexie struggles when Thatcher returns to Seattle Grace with stomach pains and a new, twenty-something tattooed girlfriend while Mark offers Jackson the chance to lead a surgery in exchange for information on Lexie. Meredith wrestles with helping cure her mother's disease or continuing her mother's legacy while Callie fights Arizona over giving up caffeine. Alex and Lucy clash when they end up treating a patient together.

Golden Hour

Plot: Looking to prove she is Chief Resident material, Meredith learns that anything and everything can happen in an hour's time when she steps up to forun the ER for a night while she and Derek continue in their efforts to make a baby. Bailey's new boyfriend encourages her to explore a different side of her and Teddy finds her marriage to Henry effecting her status in the dating world. Adele arrives as a patient in the E.R. and Meredith's concerns for her health put her into conflict with Richard.

A patient's struggles force Lexie to reconsider her recent choices with help from Jackson while April discovers there's more to Dr. Stark than first appears. Bailey grows concerned about Adele when she is admitted with an inconsistent story into the E.R once again.

The sudden death of their clinical trial patient allows Adele to be admitted into Meredith and Derek's clinical trial but when Meredith learns how fast her condition is progression she makes a risky and calculated move while Alex organizes an elaborate plan to bring Arizona's African patients to Seattle to give him an egde in the race for Chief Resident.

Meredith and Derek make a decision that could change their lives forever and, feeling inferior to Alex in the race for Chief Resident, Cristina tries to gets back on Teddy's service to showcase her talents.

Jackson suprises Richard when he decides to drop out of the trial and Teddy tries to decide whether or not to move to Germany with Andrew, and turns to Henry for guidance.
