Season nine featured 12 actors appearing in a starring billing. All season eight cast members returned for the ninth year with the exception of Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver. Both actresses departed the series in the previous year's finale with Leigh's Lexie dying and Raver's Teddy vacating her position at the hospital. Additionally, the ninth season also saw the final appearance of Eric Dane as Mark, who died from injuries sustained in the crash. Dane appeared, and was credited in a starring role, for the first two episodes of the season

Season stars Pompeo, Oh, Chambers, Wilson, Pickens Jr., Ramírez, McKidd, Drew, Williams and Dempsey appear in all 24 nineth season episodes.

Plot: Three months after the deadly plane crash, the doctors struggle with the impending loss of yet another of their own while Meredith takes her frustrations out on the newest class of interns. Alex prepares to leave for Hopkins while Cristina finds her new hospital's attitude a drastic change from the competitive world she was raised in. While dealing with her own fallout from the crash, Callie tries to help Derek through his recovery while Bailey learns that she's has a new nickname amongst the intern that's a far cry from her days as The Nazi.

Remember The Time

Plot: Months earlier, the doctors deal with the physical and emotional fallout from the plane crash. While Meredith and Derek disagree on whether to stay in Seattle or leave for Boston, especially as Derek's injuries leave his future career uncertain, Owen tries to stand by Cristina as she experiences a post-traumatic reaction to the tragedy that's followed her. Mark tries to grieve Lexie while questioning his own health while Arizona deals with her anger over the crash, forcing Alex and Callie to notice a drastic change in her, when her leg injury becomes more and more severe.

Plot: The survivors of the plane crash must make an impossible decision; whether or not to take a settlement or find out what caused the plane crash that changed their lives forever. As Meredith and Derek wrestle with their choice, Callie struggles to get Arizona to voice an opinion as she continues to struggle with her amputation, and her resentment of her wife. April returns to Seattle, which causes complications for Jackson, while Cristina tries to adjust to her new working environment and Alex tries to keep a safe distance between himself and his intern, Jo.

Elsewhere, Alex and Jo's friendship develops while Jackson treats one of Mark Sloan's old patients, but comes into conflict with Arizona when he attempts to change Mark's treatment plan, while treating a patient forces Bailey to deal with her disappointment over her honeymoon. Plot: The aftermath of the lawsuit is felt when Owen brings in Alana Cahill, a physician advisor with close ties to Richard, who is brought in to help the hospital in the face of it's imminent financial crisis but her presence causes a stir among the staff. Arizona begins to deal with the physical and emotional pain of her amputation when she begins to experience Phantom Limb Syndrome, but she finds herself trying to keep Callie distanced from her plight. Amidst a flux of pregnancy hormones, an unbalanced Meredith is forced to face her fear of flying to save a patient while Derek operates on a patient who's recovery was halted by his own injuries. Meanwhile, April attempts to run a busy E.R and Alex's attempts to save his Africa programme from being cut finds an unlikely ally - Cristina.

However, the effects of the E.R closing are felt when April's ride-a-long date with her paramedic boyfriend results in April, Alex, Jackson, Meredith, Cristina, Derek and the interns attempting to save the life of a hit-and-run victim under the cover of darkness. Meanwhile, Richard and Callie take a trip to another hospital owned by their potential buyer and get a bleak look at the future ahead of them.

Elsewhere, April is stunned to find that her boyfriend is among the explosion's victims and Alex's suspicions about Jo's boyfriend continue to grow. Meanwhile, Meredith asks Cristina to be in the delivery room with her when she goes into labour and Jackson finds himself bearing the brunt of the board, and April's, frustrations. Meanwhile, Alex and Jo's relationship faces an unexpected test when she tells him that she's decided to move in with her boyfriend while Owen struggles when Ethan's mother dies leaving him in the custody of his emotionally fragile grandmother.

Plot: In spite of the CDC declaring Bailey innocent, she struggles to let go of her anger at her fellow doctors as they try to reach out to her as she locks herself in her lab, testing herself for MRSA. Elsewhere, the arrival of new craniofacial specialist working alongside Jackson and Arizona has an unexpected effect on Arizona while Cristina and Owen are divided on Ethan's father care when Owen begins to suspect Ethan's grandmother isn't capable of caring for him. Meanwhile, Meredith and Richard band together to save the life of a woman injured during a magic trick gone wrong and Jo and Alex's friendship becomes rocky after Alex tells Jason about her chequered past.

Plot: With a super storm days away from Seattle, the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital prepare for the worst and find themselves operating in extreme circumstances. When a surgery becomes potentially dangerous, a pregnant Meredith is dismayed to be ordered off the surgery but soon finds she may run into more danger outside of the O.R. Meanwhile, after Jo's retaliation against her abusive boyfriend, Alex turns to Derek to try and protect her. Cristina and Owen find themselves at odds when Ethan's father wakes up while tensions continue to flare between Arizona and the craniofacial specialist working alongside her and Jackson. Meanwhile, Bailey continues to avoid the O.R and April's relationship with the paramedic takes a big leap forward.


Perfect Storm

Plot: The storm is coming and the damage to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital may be irreversible as a power outage forces the doctors to be innovative in the O.Rs, the ER and in the NICU. Meredith's labour proves to be more complex than initially anticipated and, as the doctors try to perform a C-section in the dark, complications force Bailey back into the O.R to save Meredith's life. Meanwhile, Arizona attempts to deal with the consequences of her betrayal of Callie while Alex prepares to tell Jo how he feels. Meanwhile, the storm forces April to reconsider her engagement in the face of her feelings for Jackson while a surgery with Webber forces Cristina to come to a realization about her future with Owen.
