Season Three of Private Practice initally aired on October 1, 2009 with the premiere episode on ABC and ended on May 13, 2010 with the season finale. The season comprises of 23 episodes.

SynopsisEdit

The first season saw the continuation of Addison's occupation at Oceanside Wellness alongside Sam, Violet, Cooper and Charlotte as well as Naomi and Pete's transition to Pacific Wellcare.

A Death In The Family

Plot: After Pete discovers Violet dying on the floor of her home, having barely survivied a violet attack from her patient Katie, she is rushed to the hospital where her life rests in Addison's hands and the whereabouts of her baby remain unknown. Meanwhile, Naomi's defection to Pacific Wellcare strains her relationships with her old colleagues as Cooper struggles with his guilt over Violet's circumstances. The situation forces Pete to recall the death of his wife, and how Violet helped him through.

The Way We Were

Plot: Violet physically recovers from her attack, but it soon becomes clear that her emotional scars are not fading as quickly and she struggles to make an attachment to her son, Lucas. Meanwhile, the men in Violet's life all deal with their own fallout from the attack as Pete returns to work and worries about leaving Violet with the baby, Sheldon copes with being shut out by Pete and Cooper does his best to avoid the situation. Now that they manage rival practices, Addison and Naomi struggle to mend their tension filled relationship.

Right Here, Right Now

Plot: Miranda Bailey arrives in L.A with a patient in desperate need of a kidney but when her donor reveals a controversial secret, she and Sam grow conflicted about the course of treatment. Addison is forced to face up to the consequences of her emotional affair when Morgan returns demanding to know if she slept with Noah, and Bailey makes Addison question if she truly did do the right thing. Violet throws herself into her work to avoid dealing the attack and giving up her son while, Violet's decision to give the baby to Pete forces Sheldon to demand they find out who the father is, once and for all.

Pushing The Limits

Plot: Addison, Sam and Cooper treat the sick child of a homeless teen mother as Cooper and Addison come into conflict after Addison suggests the doctor's buy out Naomi's shares in the practice, forcing Cooper to accept his monetary issues. Meanwhile, feeling inspired by his sucsess in the O.R, Sam pushes to return to to surgery while Violet's inability to connect with Lucas interferes when she counsels a rape victim who is now pregnant. Dell returns to work and tries to adjust to his absence from Betsey.

Plot: As Katie's trial commences, Violet wrestles with whether or not she can face her attacker and testify against her; a struggle complicated by her conflicting personal and profressional views on Katie's mental stability while Pete tries to distance himself from Violet. Meanwhile, Charlotte's determination to let Sam and Addison join Oceanside Wellness causes conflict between her and Cooper and the practice struggles when a complication with Naomi's former patients who's embryos where switches threatens both fetuses.

Plot: Naomi grows conflicted with Gabriel Fife, an unexpected new hire at Pacific Wellcare, and struggles with the idea of genetically engineering babies when he brings to impliment his controversial treatments. Pete grows concerned when Violet impulsivly recommends electric shock therapy on a patient while Charlotte is underwhelmed when he begins her practice at Oceanside Wellness but finds herself with no patients. Addison finds herself caring for Milo, her patients cat.

Plot: Addison and Sam are forced urgent field care when they discover an expecting couple trapped in their car during a hike and Addison is left with the lives of both the couple and their unborn baby in her hands. At the practice Cooper, Charlotte and Violet treat newlywed on his wedding night, prompting a well-kept secret of Charlotte's to be revealed. Violet hides in her work while Pete and Sheldon find themselves in an all-too familiar situation when they hit the bar scene together.

Plot: Addison is thrown by the arrival of her father, The Captain, when she unexpectedly arrives in L.A forcing her to face her broken relationship with him. Cooper is arrested in his bid to save a patient from his harmful step-father while Dell stuns the practice when he reveals he got married, and a concerned Violet tries to intervine. Pete fights to keep a terminally ill patient alive long enough for him to meet his daughter, chooses to turn to Fife for assistance.

Plot: Addison and her father finally find some common ground after she performs complex in-utero surgery and Addison begins to question whether he really can change while the presence of the Captain causes an unexpected reaction from Violet. Sam and Naomi face a family crisis when Maya, who they find to be growing up way too fast, begins to rebel against them. Cooper and Charlotte's relationship continues to undergo strained.

Plot: An explosion at Dell's house lands Heather and Betsey in the hospital and the doctors push themselves to the limits to save them. But when he discovers the cause of the disaster, Dell struggles to cope with the situation. Meanwhile, the tension between Addison and her father mount when Bizzy, Addison's mother, arrives in L.A. and a devestating family secret is revealed. Cooper and Charlotte's relationship buckles when he struggles to forgive her.

Plot: After her visit to Seattle Addison returns to L.A with Mark and his pregnant daughter in toe and, still reeling from the unexpected revelations about her family, Addison turns to Mark for comfort. Sam begins to feel unexpected jealousy about Mark's arrival while Cooper and Violet heatedly oppose eachother on how to handle a patient. Naomi tries to help Dell with his strained relationship with Betsey in the wake of her mother's death.

Plot: When Addison and Maya deliver the devestating news of Maya's pregnancy to her parents, Sam is left to pick up the pieces when Naomi struggles to cope with the revelation and makes an irrational choice that goes against her own beliefs. Meanwhile, Violet helps a recent widower move past his wife's death forcing her to look at her own recent losses and Pete and Fife disagree on a risky course of treatment for a patient.

Plot: On Maya's wedding day a still-distant Naomi continues to refuse to play a part in the ceremony while Sam is forced to put his own hesitations aside to support his daughter. Naomi, Addison and Pete work to save a premature infant, but Addison begins to question if they're doing more harm than good while Addison and Pete's fling continues. Cooper begins to question the ability of a surgeron on a peads case with him, who also happens to be Charlotte's new boyfriend.

Plot: Things get too close for comfort when Addison, Pete and Sam must come together on a complicated case involving a dad-to-be with tuberculosis which threatens the future of his new family, especially when Addison learns Sam is dating someone new. Naomi is caught off guard by Fife's unexpected love confession while Cooper returns from vacation with a new attitude, which angers Charlotte. When Violet doesn't return from her break in Costa Rica, Sheldon is challenged by one of her patients with a crippling fear of flying.

Plot: The doctors all find themselves conflicted romantically most notable Addison who is forced to face her feelings for Sam and decide on a future with Pete after someone mistakes her for Lucas' mother, all while going head to head with Sam's new girlfriend on a case. Naomi's finds herself torn between William and Fife, but Pete's discovery sheds new light on the love triangle while Cooper and Sheldon come to blows over Charlotte.

Plot: When famed neurosurgeon Dr. Ginsberg and her team pay a visit to St. Ambrose to wake Kayla from her coma, Addison is shocked to see Amelia Shepherd, Derek's younger sister on the team. In spite of her team insiting nothing can be done, a headstrong Amelia proposes a treatment that causes strife for Addison, Pete and Sam. Meanwhile, Sheldon encourages Charlotte and Cooper to work together and Fife tries overcome his feelings for Naomi after she leaves L.A.

Plot: After her open-ended escape to Costa Rica, Violet finally returns home and to the practice. Everyone treads a little lightly around her, especially Pete and Addison who have mixed feelings about Violet's desire to reconnect with Lucas. Meanwhile Amelia butts into Sam's personal life, pointing out that he can mend hearts in the OR but can't seem to do that for himself. Sheldon encourages Charlotte to reconcile with Cooper, while Cooper deals with a young patient who eats everything in sight.

Plot: After Violet files for joint custody of Lucas, an embittered Pete voraciously fights back by hiring a tough attorney for the trial, forcing their fellow friends and co-workers to choose sides and have their personal lives dragged onto the stand and into the public eye. Addison struggles with trying to decide what is best for Lucas while Cooper is faced with a dilema when he is asked to professionally asess Violet's competence as a mother. Naomi retuns to support her friend.

Plot: Naomi puts Fife in a conflicted position when she asks him to use his unauthorized ALS treatment on William. Meanwhile Violet and Amelia treat a woman with a brain tumor who has to choose between life or quality of life while Violet and Cooper's friendship struggles in the wake of her trial. Sheldon decides to officially throw his hat in the ring for Charlotte's affections while Dell recieves life changing news when he is accepted into med school.

Plot: In the wake of the car crash, Maya and her unborn child are left fighting for their lives and Addison, Amelia and Fife try everything humanly possible to save her. Meanwhile, unaware of his daughter's predicament Sam operates on an incoming cardiac patient but soon makes a devestating discovery about identity. Cooper makes an ill-timed but valiant effort with Charlotte while Violet and Pete try to be find a way to raise their son together. The staff's world is rocked by an unexpected death.
