Season Five of Private Practice initally aired on September 29, 2011 with the premiere episode on ABC and ended on May 15, 2012 with the season finale. The season comprised of 22 episodes.

The cast of season five, Gluck excluded.

The season featured 10 actors credited in a starring capacity. All of the fourth season actors returned with the exception of Audra McDonald who's Naomi departed the series during the last season's finale.

In the same episode as McDonald departed, Benjamin Bratt was introduced as Jake and Bratt joined the fifth season cast as a fertility specialist set to replace Naomi at the practice. In addition, Griffin Gluck joined the cast as of the sixteen episode playing Cooper's son Mason, after a twelve-episode stint as a guest star.

Season stars Walsh, Daly, Bratt, Adelstein, Strickland, Scorsone, Diggs and Brenneman appear in all 22 fifth season episodes.

Plot: When Cooper finds Pete unconscious after his heart attack, the entire staff band together to try and save his life but the situation increases the strain between Amelia and Charlotte as Charlotte continues to suspect Amelia has fallen off the wagon. Meanwhile, Addison finds herself caring for Lucas as she contemplates making the next step forward in her desire for a child while Violet, preparing to leave on her book tour, finds herself coming to the aide of a woman who suffered domestic violence, unaware of the fragile state of her own marriage.

Breaking The Rules

Plot: When the doctors begin interviewing for Naomi's position, Jake Reilly is the only doctorwho wows the staff and yet no one can understand Addison's reluctance to hire him, especially Sam. Cooper breaks the law and crosses his wife, Charlotte, when he does something extremly unethical in an effort to get cord blood for a young, sick patient. Amelia tries to prove to Charlotte that she's sober and ready to return to work while Pete begins to direct his post-heart attack frustrations towards Violet.

Plot: Jake enlists Addison to help his patient without a uterus have a baby of her own but they come to blows over the unordothox and experimental procedure Jake suggests while, still attempting to overcome her relapse, Amelia treats a patient with Parkinson's disease who struggles to keep the impulses caused by her medication at bay. Charlotte and Cooper attempt to make amends in their relationship while Violet tries to adapt to her new role and Pete turns to Sheldon for help in overcoming his sudden distance from Violet.

Plot: The case of an Addison and Jake's amnesiac pregnant patient who's husband intends to leave her after the baby is born hits impacts on all of the doctors, but none more so than Addison whose worry about Sam leaving her after she has her own child increases. Violet and Sheldon come to blows over his treatment of her former patients while Cooper and Charlotte attempt to come to terms with the arrival of Erica and Cooper's son but their differeing reaction to the situation cause a divide between them.

Meanwhile, when Amelia's friend returns to town asking for help ending her life, her resolve to stay sober is questioned.

Plot: When Amelia returns after disappearing for 12 day bender with her new boyfriend, the doctors of Seaside Wellness try to push her towards sobriety by holding an intervention. As Amelia lashes out at her friends one by one; calling Addison's quest for a child into question in lieu with her past, bringing Violet and Pete's issues to the surface and reminding Charlotte of her tragic past, they battle with the ethical dilemma of feeding Amelia's addiction in order to get her to listen.

The Breaking Point

Plot: After the devestating outcome of her spiral, Amelia begins her 50 days in rehab while trying to overcome her grief and her addiction and bonds with an 18 year old patient who also has a history of drug abuse. Violet makes a realization about the state of her and Pete's marriage while Cooper is forced to put his commitment to Mason on the back burner to help a patient. Addison gives IVF one last chance, putting a strain on her relationship with Sam.

Violet and Pete struggle to balance being parents with their seperation and Amelia returns to the practice and realizes how badly she hurt Sheldon when she was abusing drugs. Cooper deals with whether or not to punish his son.

The Standing Eight Count

Plot: Sam, Addison, Pete and Violet adjust to their new lives as singles and, dealing with her break up, Addison turns to Jake when she begins to question how much she wants a baby. Violet attracts the attention of Scott, a parademic at the hospital but struggles with accepting a date and moving on from pete. Sheldon refuses to bend to pressure when his old friend from the police force wants him to rubber-stamp a fellow cop suffering from PTSD and return him to work and Charlotte faces an ethical dilemma when Amelia uncovers a secert about Erica.

The situation quickly escalates when, however, putting Violet and her patient in grave danger. Cooper, Charlotte and Amelia all try and help Erica come to terms with her prognosis. Meanwhile, Addison looks to Jake for help in finding a surrogate mother but the search forces her to make a realization about her quest for motherhood.

Scott tells Violet that he wants to take their relationship to the next level forcing her to reconsider her position with Pete while Addison gets caught in the middle between Sam and Jake's fight about a patient. Meanwhile, Sheldon warns Sam to be careful as he deals with Corinne's return and her recovery.

Amelia struggles to accept the reality of her condition while Sam accepts the true hardships of dealing with Corinne's condition and tries to find the best way to help her.

Cooper and Charlotte struggle to deal with Mason's way of coping with his mother's death while Violet and Pete try marriage councelling, but Violet's suspicions of a patients sister causes conflict between the two. Meanwhile, Sam and Jake come to blows over Addison.

Amelia struggles with the reality of her situation while looking to Jake for guidance while a request of Addison's causes friction between her and Sam. Drifting Back

Plot: Jake tries to help Amelia through her ordeal when he begins to suspect that she may start abusing drugs again to help her cope while Sheldon returns from his extended break with his ex-wife and learns of Amelia's plight and struggles with her decision to confide in Jake. Meanwhile, Addison has difficulty defining her relationships with both Sam and Jake. Elsewhere, Violet decides to sell her house and tries to include Pete in the decision but Pete finds himself preoccupied with a case wherein the the father and boyfriend of a man disagree on his treatment , and Pete goes to extremes to do what's best for his patient.

Plot: The doctors rally behind Amelia after she goes into labour, even those she's pushed away, yet the doctors remain torn about how ethical it is to donate her baby's organs as Sheldon tries to counsel Amelia through her ordeal. Meanwhile, as Addison's relationship with Jake heats up, Sam begins to question whether he was wise to walk away from having a family with Addison and Pete's arrest puts his and Violet's marriage into perspective. Amelia's plight also forces Charlotte to assess her maternal relationship with Mason in the wake of his mother's death.
